„Zoo explorer“ competition ended

The summer programme of Zagreb Zoo „Wild summer at the Zoo“ this year also caught allot of interest from the kids which is why we secured 10 terms during the entire summer. As it is, unfortunately, difficult for the parents and children outside of Zagreb to participate, considering that it is a 5 day programme, we secured one term (26. – 30. September) for children from all over Croatia.

In colaboration with the „Večernji list“ newspaper, Zagreb Zoo organized a „ Zoo explorer“ competition which participants could enter on the web pages of „Večernji list“. Chlidren between 8 and 13 years old, from the entire country, could paricipate in the game and secure a place in our summer programme with all expenses paid. “Večernji list”newspaper, sponsors Hypo limač klub, Sunce osiguranje sa Sunčicom, Mirna d.d. from Rovinj, and Zagreb Zoo, cover the expenses of the programme and lodging for the children who live outside of Zagreb. The children and theirt parents will stay at the Ravnice Youth Hostel, our sponsor of Kookaburra birds from Australia.

In this five day programme, future naturalists have a chance to explore the zoo, our animals and nature through various practical adnm creative workshops, experiments, and many other interesting assignments. They will be preparing ice cream for brown bears, make and learn to distingush between tracks of carnivores, study how the celery root changes growth in different water and how the cabbage leaf changes colour when it is watered with water of different acidity level. Participants can learn how to make a terrarium, and in company of live animals, snakes, frogs, lizzards, insects, they can see how each animal perfectly adapts to their habitat. This little science camp will in any case create an interest in every child to some day become a scinetist and get to know the amazing world of animals and plants even better. As an incentive and as an award for the knowledge, each child that participates in the programme gets a „Zoo explorer award“.

In the competition, 20 children got a chance to participate in this programme. To get the award they had to come up with the most interesting story about animals, and our jury chose the best.
