The statement of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is a perfect message that we wish to send as part of the World Environment Day on the 4th of June 2011 from 11:00 until 18:00 o'clock. It is our wish to show how, through small changes in our habits, we can help the entire planet. Saving water, switching to energy efficient light bulbs, buying products that are packaged in biodegradable packaging (cardboard,…), using cloth bags instead of plastic, riding bicycles or public transportation more often are only some examples of how, by making small decisions, we can help the entire planet.

This year, in Zagreb Zoo, we will be emphasing recycling. Did you know that recycling only 10 tin cans can produce enough energy to power a computer for 24 hours, or that recycling only 8 plastic bottles produces enough energy for a light bulb for 24 hours? Although most people already know about paper, plastic, metal and glass recycling, unfortunately few people know other waste categories such as electronic (or EE) waste, especially where and how to recycle it.

Join us in celebration of World Environment Day and learned what EE waste is, how to dispose it, how animals suffer because of waste and what you can recycle. For the youngest participants we are preparing a creative workshop where they will be able to make animals or decorations from various waste materials and learn how to separate waste.

Populus association will also participate at the event and visitors will learn about plants, while from Hortilab they will be able to buy seedlings and plant them in their own garden.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on the 5th of June, on the anniversary of UN conference in Stockholm (1972) which was dedicated to the environment and where UN programme of the environment protection (UNEP) was accepted. Through World Environment Day, we wish to inspire people to become active participants of sustainable and even development and to take responsibility for conservation of the planet, keeping in mind that the individual role is the key to understanding the importance of environment protection and creating safer and prosperous future for all.
