Ticket winners for Zoolympics

Date: 06.01.2012.

date: January 6th, 2011

From Tuesday (3rd of January) to Thursday (5th of January) there was an award Quiz on Facebook pages of Zagreb Zoo. All participants who offered at least one correct answer to questions about animal records had a chance to win a ticket to the winter programme - Zoolympics.

Which are the correct answers?

To the first question „Which animal is the fastest?” most of participants answered that it is a cheetah who can reach speeds up to 112 km/h. With its unmatched running speed it certainly holds a record among land animals. However, many birds are faster, and the fastest among birds, and thus among all animals, is the peregrine falcon who can fly at speed over 170 km/h and can reach speeds up to 322 km/h during hunting stoop (high speed dive).

“Which animal sleeps the longest, even up to 20 hours daily?” was the second question. Although most of you think it’s a lion because it can sleep up to 24 hours after feeding, on average they sleep 13.5 hours per day which puts them in the 15th place among animals that sleep the longest. The North American opossum who sleeps 18 hours per day is in third place. Armadillo sleep a little bit longer but brown bat sleeps the longest, up to 20 hours per day.

The elephant was the most common answer to the question “Which animal has the longest tooth?”. The elephant definitively has long teeth (tusks are elongated incisors) whose length is between 140 and 240 cm. However, narwhal tusk can grow up to 280 cm. It is interesting that the tusk serves as a sensor to narwhal because 10 million nerve fibers pass through it which helps them sense the surroundings.
