Nowadays, education, along with animal conservation, scientific research, and recreation, is one of the core activities of a modern Zoo.
Zoos can inspire visitors and encourage them to understand animals and the problems they face in their natural habitat. They also provide visitors with a possibility of learning about the animals and nature firsthand through acquiring valuable experiences.
Therefore, Zoos are an invaluable source of knowledge!
For this reason, Zoos around the world offer various educational content to its visitors, which is in line with their technical and financial capabilities.
In addition to the inevitable educational signboards and boards offering information on the exhibited animals, Zoos organize various kinds of workshops, playgroups, exhibits, lectures, theme visits, etc… Some Zoos have even built small schools with specially equipped classrooms and laboratories.
The aim of educating visitors at the Zoo is to increase the level of their awareness of the importance of animal and nature conservation, as well as to enrich their knowledge.
At the Zagreb Zoo, the basic education is based on signboards that offer essential information on specific animal species and on educational signboards that offer facts on certain groups of animals, ecosystems, animal behaviour, and so forth in an interesting way. Sometimes these materials are grouped together in special smaller facilities – Info Centres.
In an attempt to raise the level of consciousness about certain topics in the area of animal conservation, biology, and ecology, we organize events at the Zoo several times per year. Along with entertainment, we organize educational workshops and exhibits, and print various brochures and worksheets.
Because education is of the utmost importance to the Zagreb Zoo, it has built an Education Centre for students and developed a rich education program.
EDUCATION PROGRAM
The education program at the Zoo offers a unique experience of the animal and natural world for preschool children, elementary and high school students, university students, as well as for other visitors. A wide array of programs has been developed for each age group: elementary, special, extra-curricular and theme-specific programs. After the individual tour of the Zoo, the children have an opportunity to acquire new knowledge in a fun and interactive way at the Education Centre.
Screenings, discussions, studying of preserved animals, contact with live animals, and practical work give a new dimension to the Zoo visit.
The program is encouraged by Croatia’s State Institute for Education.
